On the Abundance Gradient of the Galactic Disk

چکیده
Estimates of the gas temperature in planetary nebulae obtained from the [O III] emission line ratio and from the Balmer discontinuity indicate differences reaching up to 6000 K (Liu and Danziger 1993). The [O III] temperature is commonly used to obtain the ionic fractions of highly ionized ions, particularly the O and Ne ions when using the empirical method to calculate the elemental abundances of photoionized gas from the observed emission line intensities. However, if the gas temperature is overestimated, the elemental abundances may be underestimated. In particular, it may lead to an incorrect elemental abundance gradient for the Galaxy, usually used as a constraint for the chemical evolution models. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we calculate the systematic error introduced in the abundance gradient obtained from planetary nebulae by an overestimation of the gas temperature. The results indicate that the abundance gradient in the Galaxy should be steeper than previously assumed.

The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations
Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...
متن کاملB stars and the chemical evolution of the Galactic disk ?
We determine stellar parameters and He, C, N, O, Mg, Al, and Si abundances of a sample of 16 early B mainsequence stars in galactocentric distances of RGC = 5–14 kpc by reanalyzing and extending the observations of Kaufer et al. (1994) towards the Galactic center. The analysis uses Kurucz atlas 9 lte atmospheres and Giddings-Butler detail/surface non-lte line formation. It is shown that beside ...

Context. The outer parts of the Milky Way disk are believed to be one of the main arenas where the accretion of external material in the form of dwarf galaxies and subsequent formation of streams is taking place. The Monoceros stream and the Canis Major and Argo over-densities are notorious examples. Understanding whether what we detect is the signature of accretion or, more conservatively, sim...
متن کاملAbundance gradients in the outer galactic disk from planetary nebulae
Radial abundance gradients of the element ratios O/H, Ne/H, S/H, and Ar/H are determined on the basis of a sample of disk planetary nebulae. The behaviour of the gradients at large distances from the galactic centre, R > R0 = 7.6 kpc, is emphasized. It is concluded that the derived gradients are consistent with an approximately constant slope in the inner parts of the Galaxy, and some flattenin...
متن کاملComparison of Chemical Evolution Models for the Galactic Disk
The best chemical evolution models for the galactic disk computed by diierent groups with diierent assumptions are compared with each other and with the observational constraints. Diierences and similarities between the models are discussed, emphasizing the importance of testing not only the solar neighbourhood but the whole disk. The history of the metal abundance gradients is found to be very...
متن کاملOn the metallicity gradient of the Galactic disk
Aims. The iron abundance gradient in the Galactic stellar disk provides fundamental constraints on the chemical evolution of this important Galaxy component. However the spread around the mean slope is, at fixed Galactocentric distance, larger than estimated uncertainties. Methods. To provide quantitative constraints on these trends we adopted iron abundances for 265 classical Cepheids (more th...
